Medical Dermatology

Simply put, Medical Dermatology is treatment of the skin, hair and nails. But this definition barely touches upon the emotional, social and wellness issues that revolve around one’s appearance. Healthy looking skin is an integral component of one’s self esteem and social interaction. Moreover, signs of internal disease can sometimes manifest on the skin.

At Kenet Dermatology, our goal is to treat you holistically, recognizing that your skin is not merely a covering, but a reflection of your health and an integral part of your identity. We teach you how to care for your skin through a healthy lifestyle, effective skin care products and sun protection.

SKIN EXAMINATIONS
A fundamental component of medical dermatology is a thorough skin exam. Dr. Kenet uses a hand-held microscope, employing a technique called dermoscopy which allows the exam to be much more accurate than with the naked eye alone. Patients should have their skin examined at least once a year. For those with an increased skin cancer risk, a bi-annual exam may be appropriate.

SKIN CANCER
Dr. Kenet has extensive experience in the early detection and surgical removal of skin cancers. The most common type of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, is the least dangerous, though prompt and complete removal of the cancerous cells is essential. Basal cell carcinoma does not tend to spread to other areas of the body (metastasize), but can damage nearby skin. Sun exposure is the leading cause of basal cell carcinoma. People with fair skin and eyes, and those who have a family history of basal cell carcinoma are known to be at an increased risk when exposed to the sun.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer. Most cases of SCC are caused by exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The risk of developing SCC increases when a person also has one or more of these factors:

  • Fair skin
  • Blonde or red hair; blue or green eyes
  • History of indoor tanning
  • Diagnosed with actinic keratoses (AKs)
  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Weakened immune system (immunosuppression)
  • Received radiation therapy
  • History of exposure to coal tar products or arsenic

The risk of developing SCC also increases with age because each exposure to harmful UV rays causes more damage to the skin. As this damage accumulates, the risk of developing skin cancer grows.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It has the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms to look for include a change in the size, shape, or color of an existing mole, or any new mole.

Men most commonly develop melanoma on the trunk, particularly the back. Women develop melanoma commonly on the legs or arms. Melanoma is completely curable in its early stages when it is limited to the top layer of the skin. It is therefore essential to examine your skin and have any changing, growing or darkening mole checked by a dermatologist.

Limiting sun exposure, using sunblock, and wearing protective clothing remain the cornerstones for prevention of all skin cancers.

ACNE
Acne can have a devastating emotional effect, especially for teens. There is also a significant percentage of the adult population with acne conditions, especially among women during hormonal fluctuations. Dr. Kenet believes that no individual should have to suffer with acne. Fortunately, traditional treatments and more innovative solutions can reduce or eliminate acne in most cases. Topical medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, are on the frontline of acne care. For more difficult to treat cases, oral antibiotics and Accutane are highly effective.

Thermage is one of the latest emerging procedures to treat acne. Thermage acne treatments can provide excellent results after just one or two procedures. These improvements can be seen in about two months. The benefits may last up to six months.

Our AHA Light Fruit Acid Peels can help to reduce or eliminate breakouts and give your skin a smoother, healthier look. We also provide acne surgery to gently remove blackheads and other skin blockages.

Our approach to the treatment of acne is individualized and compassionate. We strive to use the most conservative approach and obtain the best results for skin that looks its best.
